If the tactile switch currently has an open circuit, pressing it will close the circuit. If it has a closed circuit, pressing it will open the circuit.

How does an tact switch work?

Tact switches work when contact is made with the dome structure of the switch. This creates a contact to complete a circuit and the signal to complete the specified function. In order to achieve high quality, tact switches need to withstand a variety of uses and cycles.

Do tact switches have polarity?

Help needed identifying + and – on momentary tactile switch. There is no polarity on a switch like that. One switch wire goes to each of the legs you’ve chosen.

Why do tac switch has 4 pins?

Mechanical stability. When soldered down with four leads the part is can’t move in any direction. The shorted pins makes the pinout slightly more versatile when routing a PCB. When introducing 2 extra pins for mechanical stability is probably cheaper (and more rugged) to build shorted pins than to add unconnected pins.
